Wehinahpay
Mountain Camp is located in the beautiful Sacramento
Mountains of South Central New Mexico at 8,500 feet of
elevation. This prime camping property is owned and
operated on 320 acres by the Conquistador Council of the Boy
Scouts of America. Wehinahpay Mountain Camp is surrounded
by the Lincoln National Forest and offers a wide and
exciting variety of quality Scout camp programs. The camp
is known for its beautiful wooded campsites, cool mountain
weather, low humidity, lack of mosquitoes, good wholesome
food, a fantastic camp staff, wildlife, and an exciting
program of camp activities. This is the land of Indians,
Conquistadors, Mountain Men, Settlers, and famous Outlaws
such as Billy the Kid. Now it is your turn to come and
experience the history and adventure of We-Hin-Ah-Pay, “The
place where morning sun gathers.”
The camp has a merit badge
program with all the traditional merit badges. In addition
there is a COPE course, climbing tower, pool, archery and
shooting range. The Troop will be attending from July 15th
to 21st, 2012. The cost which includes transportation and
meals is $270 per Scout and $145 per adult. Sign up will
start on Jan 10th. The first of five payments of $50 dollars
will be due at that time. Subsequent payments of $50 will be
due the last Tuesday of each month. There are limited slots
so please sign up as soon as possible. If you have questions
please feel free to contact me.
COPE COURSE
C.O.P.E. is an acronym for Challenging Outdoor Personal
Experience. Wehinahpay’s COPE Course is a custom built
challenge course that meets the BSA installation and
operation procedures. COPE programs are based on attaining
seven goals outlined by the Boy Scouts of America: Teamwork,
communication, trust, leadership, decision making, problem
solving and self esteem. Instructors are nationally
certified and the facility and climbing equipment are
inspected bi-annually by the ACCT.
The new Kortner Climbing Tower is operational by the
dining hall. Climbers are safely tethered while scaling a
vertical climbing wall and rappelling down the other side.
The tower supervisor is certified in the latest safety
requirements and climbing techniques, and the tower is
inspected bi-annually by the ACCT.
New shelters at the rifle and shotgun ranges enhance the
shooting experience. Scouts are taught to safely handle
firearms and have the opportunity to become proficient with
a .22 rifle, 410 shotgun and black powder firearms.
A new archery range gives bow shooters a chance to learn
the sport and hone their skills.
United Way
It is United Way time again. Did you know that you can
make your donation go towards your Boy Scout troop? You are
going to give anyway, why not put it towards your troop so
that the boys can do more fun and exciting things. The
process is very simple. All you have to do is select Cross
of Hope Church Boy Scout Troop 126. The money will actually
go 100% towards the troop. We have many parents that are
doing this already. It makes a great impact on what we can
do with the troop. Let’s all put on our giving hats on and
give through United Way to Troop 126. If you have any
questions please let me know. Deb Price 264-6492.
